Meet the Pastor!

If it tells you anything about Pastor Kyle, until recently he had two things in the back seat of his car: his clergy collar and a SuperSoaker®. Back in the 1990s his car sported the license plate “HIS KID”, a public statement of the sort of relationship Kyle has with God. He’s had his crises of faith (yes, more than one) which have served to grow his faith through a better understanding and appreciation of the reality of what Jesus is doing in his life, and in the world.

Kyle came to us as our pastor in 2007, moving from “just down the road” in Baltimore. He sees his role as pastor to not only teach, visit, lead, but to be “Patient Zero”: infecting our congregation with the same sort of passion for and trust in Jesus that he has, and then nurturing us to be contagious in our neighborhoods, our city, in all aspects of our lives.

Kyle grew up in Baltimore, but has lived around the country quite a bit: Washington D.C., Lancaster PA, San Clemente CA, Greenwich CT (where he got to know musician, vegan, activist and unusual brother-in-faith Moby), central NJ, and Beaufort SC (where Forrest Gump and Prince of Tides were filmed)…as well as spending a few years at a time in Maryland between moves. In many of these places Kyle worked with teenagers in various church and parachurch youth ministries. Though he and his wife have no children, there are dozens of young people Kyle ministered with through the years and across the country – now adults with kids of their own – that Kyle thinks of as his “kids”.

His life and ministry have been like the Portuguese proverb about God drawing straight with crooked lines: while he has been “in ministry” for nearly a quarter century, heard God’s call to pastoral ministry 20 years ago, held four professional ministry positions (and this is his second pastoral position), he realized in coming to PCH that everything else was preparation for this – that being the pastor of a downtown church in a small yet hearty city is exactly where God wanted him all along…!
